Come Around 02:44
I tried to wish you well But that just made you mad And I wish I had a dollar For every battle that we’ve had. The money that you borrowed Has long been washed away What you’re saving for tomorrow Won’t last but half a day. Won’t you come around and lay your troubles down? Won’t you come around and see me for a while? I watch you while you’re sleeping And you look just like a friend Lay awake and wonder Will our good times come again?
2.
Well, I was meant for one, my love And that one was you But I’ve had cause to doubt your words Though you’ve not been untrue. You kept me spinning on your web And that’s where I longed to hang When sweetly bound above the moon I clutched at every strand. ‘Til I grew sick of floating high Above the sea and land Let me come down to earth And I’ll be glad to take your hand I set you there against the sun Where I can see you shine And once I’ve sculpted every mood Then I will know you’re mine.

Lessons 03:43
If the fires underground Have turned your skin to clay It’s their duty to burn And yours to obey While the rain is softly falling On every tired shore And the river’s slowly rising ‘Til it rushes at your door I never meant to say I knew A better way to hide But the lessons I outgrew Left a face on every side Swifter then, to fall Than risk a step behind On those brittle afternoons When you molded every line.

Willie was a nervous man He wasn’t sleeping right Left his home for the open road One warm September night In the echoes of his footsteps As he walked the darkened town Was every choice he ever made And every dollar he laid down. Darlin’ don’t you cry for me; I’ve been wandering alone These seven years. While his wife lay sleeping He rode a southbound train And the wheels rolled to the rhythm Of the pounding of the rain And each town that fell behind him To be swallowed by the night Was like every dream that failed him In the pale blue morning light.

Going North 02:59
Sitting ‘round dreaming On the back of the sun I left you for dead Now I get nothing done The moon spills its light On the water outside And if you were here We could go for a ride On the highway that curls ‘Round her sister the river And I think I’d like to go north Please won’t you buy me A house by the sea I could work at the diner We could live easily And we’d fasten our shutters Against winter storm With the waves crashing ‘round us We’d sleep safe and warm And in the summers we’d sit And smile at the tourists And visit the beaches at night.
7.
If you’re thinking of leaving Better think fast The time for cold indecision Has long ago passed. And if you’re thinking of staying Better act like a man ‘Cause I ain’t waiting for Monday to come To do what I can. I called up the doctor ‘Cause I thought you were ill He said to burn all your records They were haunting you still. And that I was to treat you Like a horse that’s gone lame And just let you wander on your own ‘Til you felt sound again. I followed his orders And I’m left with my pride. I can’t condemn you Though God knows I’ve tried. My days are a tangle And my nights are a maze; But I’m finding my way through alright Thanks just the same.

Another week goes by I wonder how you are You like to set me in the sky And watch me from afar And as the clouds roll by I watch the town below, Where nothing ever changes And the people all move slow. I’m alone on Sunday Afternoon And the sun it will go down too soon. The morning light’s so pretty Along my windowpane But I’m not feeling ready So it might as well be rain. The clouds are softly calling And I wish that I could fly Or learn to feel at home down here And never wonder why.

O Lord 02:41
O Lord, O Lord, don't hurry me I'm unprepared to die I see your servant at the door Please let him pass me by. How can you treat a man this way And take him back so soon? I don't want to die behind these walls In the light of a cold, cold moon. This world has left me beaten, Lord I'm going to glory soon, But not until I've cleansed my soul Of lust for earthly jewels. Don't take me in this state of sin My soul is black as night I never did a thing for you But gamble, drink and fight.

California 02:28
I might live in California With the ocean at my door Or I might move to Colorado Where I won’t see you no more. I’ll pitch a tent out in the desert And pray for rain to fall Or maybe find some lonesome valley Where I’ll never have to hear your call. I’ll stay at home no longer I’m old enough to go ‘Cause I learned a few things in my childhood That a young girl should never know.

Every Day 02:51
Every day I’m waiting for a sign to take me to the place where it all began. I see birds like omens flying down so low Looking for a dry place to land. And I try to return to the place where I grew. But it’s so high above me now, I can’t pull myself through. In the deepest ocean lies a seabed meadow Where the purest wildflowers grow. Through a velvet forest sails a ship that drifted there A thousand years ago.
